What is Trauma?
Trauma is a buzzword these days that means a lot of things to a lot of people. So, let’s clear up what it means when we talk about it in clinical or therapeutic settings. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) defines trauma as exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Most therapists utilize the Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) model to evaluate a child’s exposure to trauma. These are grouped into three categories: Abuse, Neglect, and Household Dysfunction. The more traumas a person is exposed to before the age of 18 dramatically increases their probability of physical and mental health issues. That is why early intervention is critical to prevent or mitigate mental health crises. Want to see your ACE score? Look at this graphic and count how many you were exposed to before the age of 18.
